The Way Ahead - DISCOVERING YOUR PURPOSE IN LIFE
You can make many plans, but the LORD's purpose will prevail. (Proverbs 19:21 NLT)
CURRENT ISSUE: Every morning I ask myself, why am I here? Day after day this sense of worthlessness over takes me. I feel that my life is useless, because I can't seem to get anything right. My ambition to live is slowly fading away. What should I do?
THE WAY AHEAD: What’s my purpose in life is the question of millions today. They are going about their everyday lives without a sense of purpose. Living day to day never accomplishing anything of importance, people lives are miserable, unfulfilled and a repeated cycle of never ending sadness, hurt, pain and torment, they have no sense of direction for their lives because they don’t know the purpose for which God placed them on this earth.
People must be informed that they are not on this earth by chance. One needs to understand that God placed every individual on planet earth for a purpose. In other words, there is a reason for man existence. There is a reason for which God anoint us, there is a reason for everything God does under the sun and there is a reason why he takes the foolish things of the world to confound the wise. God wants you to know that he has a divine purpose for your life, which is the reason for this blog.
In reading this blog you will discover a few keys that will help you discover your reason for being on earth and what God has in store for you. In other words, you only know part of God’s purpose and plan for your life. The magnitude of what God has in store for you is far greater than what you can handle, you would freak out if He showed you the big picture all at once.
A few years ago I heard a man of God make this statement and I quote “The call of God is for us to live out our purpose.” God called us out of darkness so we may fulfill our purpose in life, therefore to help you get a hold of His purpose for your life, He has allowed me to write this blog on His divine purpose. I pray that it will bless and motive you to continue in the things of God and not give up on life. God has a Divine Purpose for your life.
Divine Purpose Defined: To help you grasp what God has to say concerning your purpose in life, let’s take a moment to define the words ‘divine’ and ‘purpose’ I believe this would be a good way to start our discussion. I feel that defining both words is important because in my own intellect, when I heard the word ‘divine’, I immediately thought of something being highly supreme in nature or character, but it’s not, it simply means to learn or discover something by intuition, inspiration or other apparently supernatural means. The word ‘purpose’ is defined as the goal or the intended outcome of something. It’s the reason for which something exists or for which it has been done or made [created]. Therefore, by reading this blog you will learn and discover your goal or the intended outcome of your life by intuition and inspiration of the Holy Ghost.
Discovering your Purpose: To live a successful and fulfilled life, there are thirteen (13) things you should remember and understand about purpose. I have listed them below in hopes of getting you to understand that God truly loves you and that he has a plan for your life, your welfare, and a plan to prosper and to give you the future you hope.
1 - God is a God of Purpose
The first and far most thing you should remember is God is a God of purpose and only His plan or purpose will last from one generation to another. In other words, Gods’ plan and purpose will continue from age to age.
…but the Eternal’s purpose stands forever, and what he plans will last from age to age (Psalms 33:11 Moffat)
The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the thoughts of His heart through all generations. (Psalms 33:11 AMP)
2 - God Sealed His Purpose with an Oath
The purpose of God for your life has been sealed within you with an oath. Simply put, God is not going to change the reason for which he created you. Gods’ purpose, Gods plan, and Gods’ agenda for your life will come to pass.
Accordingly God also, in His desire to show more convincingly and beyond doubt to those who were to inherit the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose and plan, intervened (mediated) with an oath. (Hebrews 6:17 AMP)
This was so that, by two unchangeable things [His promise and His oath] in which it is impossible for God ever to prove false or deceive us, we who have fled [to Him] for refuge might have mighty indwelling strength and strong encouragement to grasp and hold fast the hope appointed for us and set before [us]. (Hebrews 6:18 AMP)
3 - Everything was created with a Purpose
God has a plan for you. His thoughts about you are good, pure and holy thoughts. His plan for your life is intentional, meaningful and is guaranteed to bring success in your life and to give you hope in your final outcome.
For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give you hope in your final outcome. (Jeremiah 29:11 AMP)
4 - To Discover your Purpose ask the Creator and not His Creation
The fourth thing you should understand about purpose is found in the below passage of scriptures, and that’s go to God if you have a question about your purpose in life. Remember that it’s His purpose that will give you your expected end and not the purpose of man [mom, dad, brother or sister].
But when He, Who had chosen and set me apart [even] before I was born and had called me by His grace (His undeserved favor and blessing), saw fit and was pleased (Galatians 1:15 AMP)
To reveal (unveil, disclose) His Son within me so that I might proclaim Him among the Gentiles (the non-Jewish world) as the glad tidings (Gospel), immediately I did not confer with flesh and blood [did not consult or counsel with any frail human being or communicate with anyone]. (Galatians 1:16 AMP)
Nor did I [even] go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles (special messengers of Christ) before I was, but I went away and retired into Arabia, and afterward I came back again to Damascus. (Galatians 1:17 AMP)
Then three years later, I did go up to Jerusalem to become [personally] acquainted with Cephas (Peter), and remained with him for fifteen days. (Galatians 1:18 AMP)
5 - We Find our Purpose only in the Mind of Our Maker
Romans 12:2 KJV instructs the believer that to “…renew our minds daily in order that we might prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God....” The perfect will of God is the purpose of God. Therefore, to be successful in what God has called you to do your mind must be renewed continually. Your every thought must be in tune or in line with the Word [purpose] of God.
I APPEAL to you therefore, brethren, and beg of you in view of [all] the mercies of God, to make a decisive dedication of your bodies [presenting all your members and faculties] as a living sacrifice, holy (devoted, consecrated) and well pleasing to God, which is your reasonable (rational, intelligent) service and spiritual worship. (Romans 12:1 AMP)
Do not be conformed to this world (this age), [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God, even the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you]. (Romans 12:2 AMP)
For by the grace (unmerited favor of God) given to me I warn everyone among you not to estimate and think of himself more highly than he ought [not to have an exaggerated opinion of his own importance], but to rate his ability with sober judgment, each according to the degree of faith apportioned by God to him. (Romans 12:3 AMP)
6 - God Doesn’t Show Us Everything at Once
Many fail at fulfilling their purpose because they want to know the big picture all at once. So the sixth thing you should know about your purpose is this. God is not going to show or reveal everything to you all at once. A very good example of this can be found in Acts 26:16 when Jesus told Paul that he was a witness of what happen that day on the road to Damascus and what his [the Lord] was going to show him [in the future.]
But now, up on your feet--I have a job for you. I've handpicked you to be a servant and witness to what's happened today, and to what I am going to show you. (Acts 26:16 MSG)
"'I'm sending you off (Acts 26:17 MSG)
to open the eyes of the outsiders so they can see the difference between dark and light, and choose light, see the difference between Satan and God, and choose God. I'm sending you off to present my offer of sins forgiven, and a place in the family, inviting them into the company of those who begin real living by believing in me.' (Acts 26:18 MSG)
7 - God put your Purpose within you
When God created you He put your purpose within you. However, to tap it you need the assistance of wisdom and revelation. Your purpose and my purpose are deep in our hearts like water and if we desire to tap the reservoir of our purpose we must do so with the aid of understanding, wisdom and revelation. So how does one tap into their God given purpose? The most important way is to pray in the Holy Ghost [Spirit.]
The words of a [discreet and wise] man's mouth are like deep waters [plenteous and difficult to fathom], and the fountain of skillful and godly Wisdom is like a gushing stream [sparkling, fresh, pure, and life-giving]. (Proverbs 18:4 AMP)
Counsel in the heart of man is like water in a deep well, but a man of understanding draws it out. (Proverbs 20:5 AMP)
Rivers of living water will brim and spill out of the depths of anyone who believes in me this way, just as the Scripture says." (John 7:38 MSG)
(He said this in regard to the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were about to receive. The Spirit had not yet been given because Jesus had not yet been glorified.) (John 7:39 MSG)
8 - God Created everything with a Purpose
Everything God creates he creates with and for a purpose. In other words, the purpose for which a thing is created resides within the creation. Take man for example, mankind was created with the ability of stewardship inside of him.
Then God said, "Let Us make human beings in Our image, to be like Us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground." (Genesis 1:26 NLT)
9 - The Purpose of something Determines its Nature, Design and Features
The nature, design and features of a thing are always determined by its purpose. Point and case, man (male and female) was created in the image and likeness of God to rule and reign on the earth. In other words, God created man as a representation of himself. In doing so; man was given the power and authority to have dominion on earth. Therefore, the purpose for which God created man was for him to be a steward over the earth and everything that moved upon it.
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. (Genesis 1:27 KJV)
And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. (Genesis 1:28 KJV)
10 - Where Purpose is not Known Abuse is Inevitable
When a person doesn’t have a vision or don’t know their purpose in life, chances are they will end up abusing themselves and others. Many turn out to be addicts, murderers, drug dealers, prostitutes, abusive or abrasive towards other and to themselves and the list goes on. In other words, a lack of purpose will cause a person to cast off restraint.
Where there is no vision, the people cast of restraint (Proverbs 29:18 ASV)
Where there is no vision [no redemptive revelation of God], the people perish; but he who keeps the law [of God, which includes that of man]--blessed (happy, fortunate, and enviable) is he. (Proverbs 29:18 AMP)
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you [the priestly nation] have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you that you shall be no priest to me; seeing you have forgotten the law of your God, I will also forget your children. (Hosea 4:6 AMP)
11 - No Purpose Equals Experimenting with Life
A person that experiments with life is a person that’s without purpose. It is not meant for a person to try out life, we are called to live life. Life is a gift from God and if one lives it according to the Word which is the source of purpose their life will be a success.
12 - God is a Restorer of the Time Lost Due to Lack of Purpose
You may feel that it’s too late for your dreams to come true. Never stop dreaming, know that you have a purpose in this life and your age has nothing to do with it. God can and will restore everything that you have lost or that have been kept back from you by the enemy. God is a restorer of dreams and visions which equates to your purpose.
And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpillar, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you. (Joel 2:25 KJV)
And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: (Acts 2:17 KJV)
13 - The Purpose of God is the Key to your Fulfillment in Life
Understanding and knowing your purpose in life, empowers you to make the required transitions for fulfilling your purpose. Obeying Gods Word will lead you in the specific path and plan He has for you. You can discover the path God has laid out for you by studying the Word of God rather than choosing your own path.
There's a way of life that looks harmless enough; look again--it leads straight to hell. (Proverbs 14:12 MSG)
If you'll willingly obey, you'll feast like kings. (Isaiah 1:19 MSG)
The Enemies of your Purpose
Satan is the accuser and enemy of God. In other words, he is the enemy of yours and my purpose in God. His M.O. is to oppose us in our endeavors in Christ. His mission if he can is to steal, kill, stop or destroy the plan of God for our lives. Being the liar that he is, he will throw in our path everything in his arsenal, including the kitchen sink to get us off course. Simply put, there are enemies of our purpose.
10 Enemies of your Purpose
1 - The Lack of Understanding and Knowledge
When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. (Matthew 13:19 KJV)
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children. (Hosea 4:6 KJV)
2 - Shallowness
The next enemy we are going to discuss is shallowness. Shallowness is the lack of depth of knowledge or thought or feelings.
But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; (Matthew 13:20 KJV)
Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. (Matthew 13:21 KJV)
3 & 4 - The Cares and Riches of This World
He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. (Matthew 13:22 KJV)
5 - Holding on to the Past
Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, (Philippians 3:13 KJV)
I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3:14 KJV)
6 - Peoples Opinion
In the below passage of scriptures, Jesus addressed the opinion of Satan [Peter].
And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must of necessity suffer many things and be tested and disapproved and rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be put to death, and after three days rise again [from death]. (Mark 8: 31AMP)
And He said this freely (frankly, plainly, and explicitly, making it unmistakable). And Peter took Him by the hand and led Him aside and then [facing Him] began to rebuke Him. (Mark 8:32 AMP)
But turning around [His back to Peter] and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter, saying, Get behind Me, Satan! For you do not have a mind intent on promoting what God wills, but what pleases men [you are not on God's side, but that of men].) (Mark 8:33 AMP)
7 - Distractions
A distraction is anything that diverts a person’s attention. It may come in the form of amusement or from one’s emotions.
8 - Unbelief (Disobedience)
Seeing then that the promise remains over [from past times] for some to enter that rest, and that those who formerly were given the good news about it and the opportunity, failed to appropriate it and did not enter because of disobedience….(Hebrews 4:6 AMP)
Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief: (Hebrews 4:6 KJV)
9 - Trusting in Your Own Ability
This is what GOD said: (Jeremiah 1:4 MSG)
"Before I shaped you in the womb, I knew all about you. Before you saw the light of day, I had holy plans for you: A prophet to the nations-- that's what I had in mind for you." (Jeremiah 1:5 MSG)
But I said, "Hold it, Master GOD! Look at me. I don't know anything. I'm only a boy!" (Jeremiah 1:6 MSG)
GOD told me, "Don't say, 'I'm only a boy.' I'll tell you where to go and you'll go there. I'll tell you what to say and you'll say it. (Jeremiah 1:7 MSG)
Don't be afraid of a soul. I'll be right there, looking after you." GOD's Decree. (Jeremiah 1:8 MSG)
GOD reached out, touched my mouth, and said, "Look! I've just put my words in your mouth--hand-delivered! (Jeremiah 1:9 MSG)
See what I've done? I've given you a job to do among nations and governments--a red-letter day! Your job is to pull up and tear down, take apart and demolish, And then start over, building and planting." (Jeremiah 1:10 MSG)
10 - Having the Wrong Image of Yourself
And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it. (Numbers 13:27 KJV)
Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there. (Numbers 13:28 KJV)
The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan. (Numbers 13:29 KJV)
And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it. (Numbers 13:30 KJV)
But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we. (Numbers 13:31 KJV)
And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature. (Numbers 13:32 KJV)
And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight. (Numbers 13:33 KJV)
Walking in your Purpose
Walking in your purpose will require five things on your part, 1) FAITH; 2) COMMITMENT; 3) FOCUS; 4) KNOWING THAT YOU ARE ANOINTED FOR PURPOSE and 5) KNOWING THAT ONES PURPOSE IS ACTIVITIED BY THE WORD AND SPIRIT OF GOD. Keeping these five things before you will empower you to step into your full potential in God.
Hitting the mark of your destiny will require you not looking to the left or right of the path you are on; if you do it will hinder or stop you completely in your quest in God. Therefore, it is imperative that you DO NOT entertain Satan distractions, press through them and remain firm in your purpose and when the dust settles, you will be the head and not the tail, above only and not beneath. (Deuteronomy 28:13 KJV)
I pray this month’s blog encouraged you in your walk with God. Until next month keep your faith and trust in God.
